I ordered this book thinking it was the next one in Ms. Meade’s excellent murder mystery series “Marjorie McClelland.” To my delight, this was a new series. What joy! And, to my profound happiness, the book was just that, a joy to read!

Stella and Nick Buckley have shed their city clothes and are beginning a new chapter in their lives. They move to Vermont, in order to allow Nick to have his dream job, “Forest Ranger.” The first five years of marriage they followed Stella’s career, a museum curator. Now it is Nick’s turn. The move does not come without pain, Stella loses the job she applied for, however, you can sense their love is strong and she is adjustable to life’s surprises, happy or sad.

Their move is challenged almost immediately, when they go to wash their hands and find the water red with human blood. The police move in and the young couple must move out (not that they had moved in yet,) and what to do but, investigate the murder!

The town is very unusual but seem willing to talk to these new ‘flatlanders.’ That was just the bit out of character for me, but, the joy of cozies to me is the quirky characters that are the norm in the book.

I really enjoyed the murder chase and getting introduced to Stella and Nick. I hope to be their ‘book’ neighbor for many years to come.

    Well-Offed in Vermont.
The characters are whip smart (fortwo) and their dialogue carries the story. It’s as if you are reading your favorite 1940′s black and white comedy. A true treasure. Yup!

Stella and Nick Buckley have just traded in their New York City life for a small town in Vermont so Nick can pursue his dream of being a forest ranger. They arrive at their new home a few days early to begin unpacking only to find that their sinks are running with blood thanks to the body in their well.

The body was Allen Weston who was supposed to be there fixing their well. He owned several related businesses in town, and all any of the locals can say is he was a good businessman. With their house closed off as a crime scene, Nick and Stella have motivation to spend their sudden free time trying to track down the killer. But their question soon becomes not who wanted Allen dead but who didn’t.

This is my first book by Amy Patricia Meade, and I enjoyed it. It got off to a shaky start with a bit too much background info on the characters, but when the story really got rolling, I enjoyed it. Stella and Nick are a great couple with a strong marriage and some fun banter back and forth. I enjoyed the small town Vermont setting. While I have only visited the state for a few days, I had to nod my head at many of the discussions about outsider’s assumptions of Vermont versus reality.

If you are looking for new cozy series, give this one a chance. It’s got a good story, fun characters, and a charming setting. What else could you want?
