A lot of us resent advertisements masquerading as free novels. This doesn’t “include” excerpts – it is ONLY excerpts (the first, or first couple of chapters) of four different novels. If I wanted samples I’d have downloaded the samples for these books.

I thought I was getting a novel but it’s a short story and it was free. That said, it is a pleasant mystery that takes place during WW I in England. Well written, what there was of it. I will look forward to reading more of Charles Todd’s work.

I thought I was getting an entire book and story, it was a 10 minute read. Short story to say the least.

I don’t often get caught this way…but for some reason before I picked out this book for my Kindle, I didn’t notice how small the KB number was. If I had, I wouldn’t have chosen it — even though it was free.
I just don’t understand why amazon doesn’t consistently point out what is a short story and what is a full-length novel and I think it’s a cheat that they don’t, free or not.
The story itself was okay. If you want a short story this is a pretty good one. I am guessing they are trying to introduce us to the protagonist (Bess Crawford) so we’ll want to run out and buy the full-length novels. But judging from this short, I wouldn’t buy any more of the books. They take place during WWI (something else that came as a surprise to me). I wouldn’t mind checking some books out of the library though.

Unlike other reviewers, I don’t think that this product was misrepresented. You do get a free short story. But the story was shorter than I expected, and although well written, wasn’t up to Todd’s usual standards.
While on holiday in May 1916, Bess Crawford encounters the corpse of a young girl on the beach. The young woman has been murdered, and Crawford aids Inspector Robbins in solving the crime. This is a very short story, so the solution isn’t complicated. Although there are a few clues, this isn’t a Playfair mystery–the solution, though plausible, comes out of nowhere. The story is serviceable, but it isn’t stellar. This is yet another case where you get what you pay for.
The rest of the document are previews of three other novels, two including Bess Crawford and one starring Ian Rutledge.
