Kumihimo is a Japanese word for a braided cord. A centuries-old art form, now you can do it with the KumiLoom, a modern, easy-to-use braiding disk.
This kit contains the KumiLoom personal Kumihimo braiding disk; 8 fantastic EZ-Bob cord-handling bobbins, making the work much easier and faster; a set of practice cords; and a 10 page booklet of instructions for the round braid!
In the early 8th century, when the Buddhist religion spread in Japan, people began to use decorative braids in ceremonies. The making of these beautiful, usually silk, braids became an art, and later, people used colorful braids to decorate their clothing, hang ritual banners, lace samurai armor together, tie robes, and decorate weapons. Braids can be found in many cultures, but the Japanese developed the highest order of braiding techniques and complexity.
Today, you can create beautiful braided cords in the Kumihimo style with the KumiLoom, the modern braiding disc. The notches provide the correct tension, so you don’t need hanging weights. The cord winds up into the individual flexible bobbins, so you keep a compact workspace, but easily and quickly feed cord as you braid. There are 8 bobbins in this kit.
So many uses! Your braids can be used to hang jewelry, for coiling on gourds or baskets, or as a purse handle. Braided cords are also used for eyeglass cord, cell phone loops, lanyards, light pulls or curtain ties, clothing, key chains, leashes, zipper pulls, binding, decoration, costumes…there’s no end to uses for intricate braided cords.

This is the best starter kit I’ve seen for Kumihimo braiding. The directions, both in the book and the “quick-start” directions on the kumiloom, are easy to understand. The kit even includes cord so you don’t have to buy anything else to start on a project. I was braiding within minutes!
The lightweight kumiloom disk is made from high quality, dense foam – not “styrofoam” as another reviewer claims. It’s small enough to carry with you for travel. The plastic bobbins are most helpful in keeping the cords from getting tangled with one another. I am very happy with the quality and value of this kit.

This is a beautifully designed product with excellent directions. I find it the perfect accompaniment for travel and meetings. With the very clear step-by-step instructions and photos, I was making braids in no time! I’ve had a great time trying all different kinds of threads.
The disk and bobbins are high quality and hold the proper tension on all types and thicknesses of cord, ribbon, thread, etc. to ensure your braids will be perfect.
This is a great “carry along” project, small and lightweight, for those times when you’re waiting (doctors, hospitals, kids to finish practice, travel and more). It’s also relaxing and a great stress reliever!

Love this disk! I’ve used two other different brands and this is the best by far. I also like the shape of this one compared to the round disk. The disk holds the threads just the way I like and hasn’t seemed to loosen the hold with time like another that I used.
No trouble with the bobbins if the threads aren’t kept too long. I’ve got both the small and large bobbins to use based on length of threads as well as thickness of the threads.
Great kit! My 7 year old granddaughter uses my disk if I don’t watch out! She has her own (one of my old round ones), but I guess I’ll have to get her one like mine.

After seeing a beading magazine article on the Japanese art of braiding, Kumihimo, I searched out a way to learn it. I came upon this wonderful starter kit that made the process simple yet offered tons of potential.
The KumiLoom disk is excellent quality and the starter products (instructions, sample cord and booklet) were ample to get started immediately.
I’ve since mastered more intricate braiding techniques but I still use the KumiLoom for all my projects.
This Kumihimo Starter Kit would make an excellent gift for a young girl interested in friendship bracelets and handmade jewelry.
